Do you know why ‘Juneteenth’ is celebrated?
June 19 commemorates the day in 1865 that federal troops finally arrived in Galveston, Texas to end slavery for African American slaves, two-and-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
Why is it called ‘Juneteenth’?
The term Juneteenth is a blend of the words June and nineteenth. The holiday has also been called Juneteenth Independence Day.

Today, we join in celebrating ‘Juneteenth’, also known as ‘Freedom Day’ or ‘Emancipation Day’, which became a national holiday just last year.
